The English Premier League, otherwise known as the FA Premier League, is a league comprised of the highest ranking clubs in English league football. It´s the biggest, most recognised football competition in England, perhaps even the world. Today, the English Premier League is made up of 22 clubs, with clubs being relegated and promoted, to and from the First Division.

The FA Premier League was first established in 1992, due to many clubs wanting to split from The Football League, so that they could land profitable television and sponsorship deals. During its years the FA Premier League has evolved in to the worlds most prestigious, most televised, sports event. It´s also big, big business , with annual club turnovers topping nearly 1.5 billion pounds.

The football season starts in August and goes through until May. Clubs get to play each other twice during this time; once at home and the other away. This means that each club will play a total of thirty-eight games, throughout the whole season.

Points are awarded for winning or a drawing a game; 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. A team´s rank in the league is determined by the number of points they’ve accumulated, then by the goal difference and then number of goals scored. If at the end of the season, two teams occupy the same top slot, then a play-off must occur to determine the winner.

The top two teams from the Football League Championship are promoted up into the FA Premier League, whilst the 3 at the bottom of the FA Premier League are relegated to the Football League Championship.
